Chapter Eight
QUINN was surprisingly nervous the first night he and Porter decided to hang out as friends outside of work. They’d agreed to do something at Porter’s house since his sister was on shift and it would just be the two of them. He dressed in jeans, a T-shirt, and a cardigan, since he didn’t want to look like he was trying too hard. Then he took the sweater off and put on a jacket. Quinn probably changed between the two of them five times before he yanked the sweater on, irritated with himself, and stomped out to the car. Sure, he and Porter had barely melted the ice; sure, Porter was strong and businesslike and older and gorgeous and a little scary, but Quinn had partied with billionaires and princes. He could take on one grumpy COO with the most gorgeous eyes he’d ever seen. Right?
Right.
His stomach quaked all the way over to Porter’s house. He pulled up on the side of Lake Washington and checked the address on his GPS again.
“Jesus.”
Quinn was used to luxury, had seen his share of opulence, but he hadn’t expected Porter to belong to… this. There was a string of enormous modern structures floating beside a long dock. They were light and intimidating and covered in glass to show off views from every angle. Quinn walked down the dock, counting house numbers until he got to Porter’s—perhaps one of the largest ones on the strip.
“Not exactly what I pictured,” Quinn murmured. When he heard houseboat, he figured it would be quaint and cute like Sleepless in Seattle. Those houseboats must’ve been on a different corner of the lake, because no. Not in Porter’s neighborhood. Quinn looked at his phone and up at the giant floating mansion in front of him one more time and stepped in front of the door to knock. It was definitely the right place. Wow.
Porter opened the door, wearing a pair of jeans and an artfully faded T-shirt. “You found me,” he said with a grin. “People usually wander down the wrong dock the first time or two.”
“It’s kind of hard to miss this one,” Quinn muttered.
“A little ostentatious, aren’t they?” Porter said with a smile. “Good investment. Plus, I like the water.”
“You can see a lot of it,” Quinn said. He looked out the windows that were practically everywhere in Porter’s house. There was a panoramic view of the lake and the other palatial houseboats. “Guess you and the neighbors are quite friendly.”
“You can’t really see in during the day,” Porter said with a laugh. “And we’re all very good at remembering to close our blinds at night if we want… private time.”
Quinn snorted. “Good to know.” It was probably better if he didn’t dwell on Porter and private time any longer than necessary.
Porter smiled again. He looked so friendly. It was such a difference from the Porter Quinn had gotten during those first few weeks. He really liked it. “So. Pizza?”
“Sure. Where do you like to order from?” Quinn asked.
